Not only do students from Smart’s Mill Middle School in Loudoun understand watersheds and riparian buffers – they’re doing something with that knowledge. Many students have sent letters to their supervisors, urging them to adopt the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance (CPBO) in Loudoun. Jada Iraia and Ilian Burgos, eighth graders at Smart’s Mill, wanted to speak before the Board of Supervisors at the June 21 public input session, but the meeting conflicted with their final band concert at school. Instead, with the help of one mom, they shot a video next to Tuscarora Creek, their neighborhood stream, urging the Board to adopt the CBPO.
As Ilian puts it, “we should strive hard to keep our environment clean and healthy so future generations can appreciate what we have.”
Thanks to students who care. A prayer offerred that the money we egotistically worship does not speak louder than the natural world that actually supports our lives….
Virginia,
How right you are, Virginia. Our society believes that money can buy everything people need. My students are surprised when I tell them that everything we need comes from nature. I challenge them to think of a necessity that does not. They have a hard time thinking of one. How do we re-direct our values and energy? What will it take for people to realize the importance of sound environmental stewardship? Do you think the BP disaster has fostered any real environmental awareness?
Natalie, values and energy pins the issue. We could choose to look at the “ingredients, not the barcodes” as Barbara Kingsolver (Author of “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle”) discussed on American Public radio in her talk with Krista Tippett… “We think local organic food is expensive” until we learn to use ingredients together. When we spend time looking at where our energy and time is spent, what really replentishes us, we begin to choose differently. I think it really takes getting outside, getting our leaders to appreciate nature. Harry homeowner may not recognize that mass-produced chemicals, meats, and manicured lawns waste resources. But a wizened leader could make a significant difference. I believe you are one. Keep the faith.
